Welcome back to our second episode featuring scary stuff, things that go bump in the night, creepy basements, unexplained messages from the beyond and more! This week we're talking about the house we grew up in...if you've been listening, you know that we grew up in a haunted house, which made for some interesting times growing up and some even more interesting stories to share! Of course, we have a collection of haunted house stories that are the stuff of family legend and you're going to hear one of them today, as told by first by our cousin Heather, who regularly visited us during the summer and our sister, Erin. We're calling this story Do Not Go in the Basement. We have four stories today all about the haunted house we called home, stay with us for stories about that creepy basement and more!

I'm really proud of this week's episode, which airs August 8, 2019, and hope you'll give a listen. It's a very special episode for a couple of reasons... first of all, August 8, 2019 is the day myself and my sisters chose as D- Day when we started the podcast as the date we would decide if we wanted to keep doing the podcast!
And, it would have been our (myself and Kari's) dad's 79th birthday on this airdate. He is a big reason I have had a life-long love of broadcasting and also a huge inspiration for me doing this podcast! He died when he was 28 and I was 6. But, he lived a very full and amazing life in those 28 years, this week's episode is a tribute to him and it would be an honor for me if you listen. If you’ve ever taken a load road trip through the western half of the United States… through states like Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and, Arizona...you’ll appreciate our first story today… which is really more of a conversation between myself and my sister Jenny as we relate our different experiences of driving through a part of the country which is still in many, many ways… the wild west. Then mys sister Erin and I reminisce about childhood with a couple funny stories which have also become part of family our lore. Lastly, we have a sweet short call-in story from my friend, writer, and fellow podcaster, Nicole Rivera who shares her own How in the Hell did I get here moment from a recent writing conference in New York City. Nicole’s amazing podcast is called Stop Writing Alone and it’s a recommended listen!

So, today’s show is airing just a few days before Mother’s Day 2019 and we wanted to take some time to honor all Mother’s everywhere… truly mom’s come in all shapes, sizes and types, right? Mom moms, grandma moms, sister moms, friend moms, adopted moms, foster moms, dog moms, cat moms, bird moms, fish moms, plant moms… there are all types of moms and all types of people, animals and even plants that appreciate being mothered. Today’s show is for all of you… the moms and the mothered.
We've all had strange encounters with animals... maybe a bat swoops through your living room, a deer jumps in front of your car, or a mouse runs up to you in the kitchen, and in true How in the Hell did I get here fashion, sisters Jenny Gardner, Kim A. Flodin, and Erin Beach take it up a notch in this episode featuring three stories of strange encounters with animals.
In the first story, Jenny shares the time she had a real-life sighting of Monkey Dog! What's a monkey dog you ask? Listen in to find out! In the next story, Kim, Jenny and Erin share a harrowing tale of a dark and misty night at Jenny and family's hobby farm. What was that thing shuffling and snorting in the shadows? Is it dangerous? Will it eat the dog? Will anyone ever respond to Erin's screams of terror? In our final story, Kim ventures out of the country for the very first time and finds herself in a hostage situation... with a monkey!
