We’re back with the last episode of our four-part series featuring our special guest and amazing storyteller, Kevin Ball.
If you missed Parts 1 through 3, you might want to go back and listen to those now. Kevin ran away from home at age 15, hitchhiked from Chicago to California, and then on to Seattle where he joined his first carnival. and then stayed working carnivals for the next almost 2 years before finally returning home to Chicago and a cool welcome from the nasty stepfather who Kevin left to avoid in the first place. It was pretty clear to him that going home wasn’t an option, so three days after his 17 birthday, he joined the Navy and that’s where we find him in the first story he shares today. - Join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/groups/howinthehelldidIgethere/ - Follow us on Instagram @kimaflodin or @howinthehellpodcast - Share your love for the show with financial support! https://buymeacoffee/thecoloringbookcoach - Subscribe to my other podcast: How to Fall in Love with Yourself TOOLKIT - Thank you YouTube Free Music Audio Library & Silent Partner for our theme song, 7th Floor Tango and ad music, Blue Skies https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCht8qITGkBvXKsR1Byln-wA
Welcome back to Part 3 of our 4-Part Series we’re calling Secrets of a Runaway Carnival Worker featuring our special guest Kevin Ball.
If you missed Part 1 and 2, please go back and listen to those now. Kevin Ball’s stories from his runaway adventures at 15 just don’t quit… this week he tells us about a night he spent in jail and he goes a lot deeper into what life was like for him after he started working carnivals in the mid-’70s. A reminder that we recorded these stories during a long virtual happy hour. We had four out of five sisters and a couple of brothers-in-law who floated in and out, which explains some of the sound quality.

Welcome back to Part 2 of our 4-Part Series called Secrets of a Runaway Carnival Worker featuring our special guest Kevin Ball.
If you haven’t listened to Part 1 which aired on May 7, 2020, please do that. In this episode, Kevin Ball continues sharing his stories from his time working carnivals after running away from home at age 15 in the mid-70s. Today’s episode covers a lot of ground with stories about being picked up by a state trooper on a Native American reservation, plus breaking into his own house as he hitchhiked back across the country, experiencing a carnie initiation, an interesting ‘gift’ from a fellow carnival worker and more… We signed off last week with Kevin just having reached Seattle after hitchhiking from Chicago to California and then deciding he should go to Seattle. Stay with us to hear what happens to him next!
Kevin Ball has stories that leave people saying, “no way, that sounds like something you’d see in a movie!" and we’re so happy he agreed to sit down with me, Kari, Jenny, and Erin on a recent marathon zoom happy hour.
In this four-episode series, he takes us from running away from home in the 70’s when he was just 15, joining and working carnivals for almost two years as a runaway and then joining the navy at 17 and becoming an aviation anti-submarine warfare operator. Currently, Kevin works in the film industry as a Key Grip and has for 30 years and we hope to have him on in future episodes to tell some of those crazy stories, but let’s start where we are… with Kevin’s interesting stories about leaving home, the carnival, and joining the navy. These stories were recorded during a fun marathon zoom happy hour attended by four out of five sisters with some of the brothers-in-law and rotating in and out, which explains the sound quality and some of the hubbub you might hear in the background. - Join us on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/groups/howinthehelldidIgethere/ - Follow us on Instagram @kimaflodin or @howinthehellpodcast - Share your love for the show with financial support! https://buymeacoffee/thecoloringbookcoach - Subscribe to my other podcast: How to Fall in Love with Yourself TOOLKIT - Thank you YouTube Free Music Audio Library & Silent Partner for our theme song, 7th Floor Tango and ad music, Blue Skies https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCht8qITGkBvXKsR1Byln-wA |
